Landscaping in North Bismarck

Bismarck Landscape works all over north Bismarck, in ZIP code 58503 and the newer subdivisions like Heritage Ridge, Silver Ranch, Boulder Ridge and Northridge. This is where most of the city’s growth has been, and a lot of yards here started as bare, rutted construction dirt on open prairie.

That changes what a yard needs. On the north side, the big jobs are grading, sod, sprinklers, windbreaks and snow removal for wide driveways on windy lots. Here’s what to do, in what order, and the local rules and resources that apply.

NEW BUILD • CLAY SOIL • SOD

What North Bismarck Yards Need Most

  • Grading and drainage. The building code calls for the ground to drop at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet from the foundation. On a new lot, this is the moment to get it right. See yard drainage and grading.
  • Real topsoil. NDSU says topsoil for a new lawn should be “at least 6 inches deep; deeper is better,” and warns against adding sand to clay.
  • Sod or seed. Sod gives you a lawn right away. NDSU’s seeding window is August 15 to September 15. See sod installation.
  • Sprinklers. New sod needs daily water for about 3 weeks, and lines go in easiest before the grass. See irrigation.
  • Windbreaks and shade trees, because open lots get the full force of prairie wind. See best trees and shrubs for Bismarck.
  • Aeration for young lawns on packed construction soil. See aeration and overseeding.

PLAN SMART • BUILD IN THE RIGHT ORDER

The New-Build Order That Saves Money

  1. Grading and drainage
  2. Sprinkler system, if you want one, before the sod
  3. Sod or seed
  4. Windbreak and shade trees
  5. Beds, rock and curbing
  6. Patio and retaining walls, often a year or two later

That order keeps you from tearing up a new lawn to add sprinklers later, and puts the money where north side yards need it first. See how much landscaping costs in Bismarck.

WINDBREAKS • DRIFTING SNOW

Wind and Snow on the North Side

Wide driveways and open lots next to prairie mean wind can drift snow right back onto a cleared drive.

  • Clear the sidewalk within 24 hours after the snow stops. That’s City Ordinance 10-03-04, and the city can clear it and bill you.
  • Keep snow out of the street. Fines can reach $1,000.
  • Put in driveway stakes along edges, curbs and sprinkler heads before the ground freezes, so blowers stay off the new lawn.
  • Spread out snow piles on the lawn instead of stacking every storm in one spot, which cuts down on snow mold in spring.
  • Plant for the wind. Iowa State Extension says windbreaks work best on the north and west sides of the home. On a city lot, a row of evergreens along that side cuts wind across the yard and helps with drifting.

CITY COLLECTION SITES • NORTH SIDE

Yard Waste and Wood Chips on the North Side

The City of Bismarck runs yard waste collection sites from April through October. Sites on the north side include:

  • Northbrook Shopping Center, 1900 block of North Washington Street
  • Saints Drive, north of 57th Avenue NE
  • Ash Coulee Water Tower

They take grass clippings, leaves, garden waste, pinecones and pumpkins. No bags of any kind, no sod, and no branches or twigs. Branches go to the Bismarck Landfill, where clean wood costs $40 a ton. Sites can change, so check the city’s list before you go.

Wood chips. The city offers single-grind wood chips at no charge, on a trial basis, at the Ash Coulee Water Tower, at the northwest corner of Ash Coulee Drive and North Washington Street. Because of emerald ash borer, the city says the chips can’t leave Burleigh County. See landscape rock, mulch and curbing.

EMERALD ASH BORER • NORTH BISMARCK

Ash Trees on the North Side

Emerald ash borer was first found in Bismarck in late August 2026, near Interstate Loop on the north side, by city forestry crews removing declining ash. If you have ash trees in your north Bismarck yard, now is the time to decide whether to protect them. See should you treat or remove your ash tree.

For new plantings, skip ash entirely, since the city no longer allows ash on boulevards, and be careful with maples, which struggle in alkaline soil. Planting a tree on the boulevard needs a city permit, and the city’s Partners in Planting program pays back half the cost, up to $100 per tree. See boulevard tree permits in Bismarck.

Questions

North Bismarck Landscaping FAQ

Answers about new-build yards, snow drifting, local collection sites and ash trees in North Bismarck.

Planning a yard in North Bismarck?

Start with the new-build steps, check wind and snow advice, or explore local services.

Do you do landscaping in north Bismarck?

Yes. Bismarck Landscape works throughout north Bismarck, ZIP code 58503, including Heritage Ridge, Silver Ranch, Boulder Ridge and Northridge. We do grading, sod, sprinklers, trees, lawn care, patios, walls and snow removal.

What should I do first with a new-build yard in Bismarck?

Start with grading and drainage, so the ground drops at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet from the foundation. Then add sprinklers if you want them, then sod or seed, then trees, then beds, and patios and walls last.

Should sprinklers go in before sod?

Yes, if you want a system. Putting sprinkler lines in before the sod means you don’t have to cut up a new lawn later. New sod also needs daily watering for about 3 weeks, which is much easier with a working system.

Where can I take grass clippings in north Bismarck?

To the City of Bismarck’s yard waste sites, open April through October. North side sites include the Northbrook Shopping Center on North Washington Street, Saints Drive north of 57th Avenue NE, and the Ash Coulee Water Tower. No bags and no branches.

Where was emerald ash borer found in Bismarck?

Near Interstate Loop on the north side. City forestry crews found it in late August 2026 while removing declining ash trees. It was the first find in central North Dakota, and Burleigh County is now under a state quarantine.

How do I stop snow drifting onto my driveway?

You can’t stop the wind, but you can slow it. Iowa State Extension says windbreaks work best on the north and west sides of the home, so a row of evergreens on that side helps. Until it grows, plan on a return trip after windy storms.
