BISMARCK FAQ • TOPIC 01

Landscaping Costs and Hiring

5 local questions answered.

How much does landscaping cost in Bismarck?

Most jobs cost a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. LawnStarter’s Bismarck data, updated September 2026, puts mulching at about $275, sod installation at about $2,394, a typical landscaping job at about $2,693 and hardscaping at about $18,000. See how much landscaping costs in Bismarck.

How much does lawn mowing cost in Bismarck?

About $30 to $100 per cut, depending on lot size. A 1/4-acre lot usually runs about $40 to $55 per mow, based on HomeBlue’s 2025 Bismarck estimates. Hourly lawn work runs about $60 to $80.

When should I book landscaping work in Bismarck?

Book in late fall or winter for spring projects. Bismarck has only about 129 days between frosts, so May and June fill up fast. Sprinkler blowouts and snow removal should be booked before the first hard freeze and the first snow.

What should a landscaping quote include?

A good quote lists materials, labor, cleanup and hauling, plus square footage or number of zones, trees or visits. For patios and walls, it should say how deep the gravel base is. For trees, it should say where the wood goes and who pulls any boulevard permit.

Does a tree service need a license in Bismarck?

Yes. Anyone doing paid tree pruning or removal in Bismarck needs a city commercial arborist license, unless they work under the direct supervision of a licensed arborist. The city keeps a public list you can check. See our tree services.

BISMARCK FAQ • TOPIC 02

Lawn Care

7 local questions answered.

How high should I mow my lawn in Bismarck?

About 3 inches for most lawns. NDSU recommends 2.5 to 3.5 inches, and never cutting off more than one-third of the blade at once. Make the final mow of the fall at about 2 inches. See lawn care in Bismarck.

When should I fertilize my lawn in Bismarck?

Around Memorial Day and again around Labor Day. If you only feed once, do it in early September. NDSU says to make September the last feeding, since late-fall nitrogen makes gray snow mold worse.

Why is my lawn yellow even after I fertilize?

Usually because Bismarck’s alkaline soil ties up iron, so the grass can’t use it. NDSU suggests a soil test first, then a fertilizer with about 3% to 5% iron. Skip lime, since North Dakota soils rarely need it.

Is my brown lawn dead or dormant?

In a Bismarck summer, it’s usually dormant. Cool-season grass slows down in heat and drought and greens up again when cooler, wetter weather comes back. Keep foot traffic off it and hold fertilizer until Labor Day.

When should I put down crabgrass preventer in North Dakota?

About a week before the soil reaches 55°F at 4 inches deep, which NDSU says is usually mid-April to mid-May. Don’t use most preventers where you plan to seed, since they also stop grass seed.

What grass grows best in Bismarck?

Cool-season blends. NDSU suggests mixing Kentucky bluegrass for a thick, hardy lawn, fine fescue for shade and salty spots along sidewalks, and a little perennial ryegrass to sprout fast and hold new seed in place.

When can I lay sod in Bismarck?

After the last spring frost, which usually falls around May 12 to 14. Sod and planting season runs until about late September, when the first fall frost usually comes. Prep the clay with compost and grading first.

BISMARCK FAQ • TOPIC 03

Trees and Emerald Ash Borer

5 local questions answered.

Is emerald ash borer in Bismarck?

Yes. Bismarck city forestry staff found it in late August 2026 near Interstate Loop, the first find in central North Dakota. Burleigh County is now under a state quarantine. See our emerald ash borer guide for Bismarck.

Should I treat or remove my ash tree?

It depends on its health. NDSU says a healthy ash with less than about 40% of the canopy dead can be protected, and trunk injections of emamectin benzoate last about 2 to 3 years. Trees past about 40% decline usually aren’t worth treating.

Can I move ash wood out of Burleigh County?

Not without a permit. Under the quarantine, ash logs, branches, wood chips, nursery stock and hardwood firewood can’t leave Burleigh County, and civil fines can reach $5,000. Mandan is in Morton County, so that includes hauling ash wood across the river.

Do I need a permit to trim or remove the tree by the curb?

Yes. Trees between the sidewalk and the curb are boulevard trees owned by the City of Bismarck. Pruning, planting or removing one needs a city permit, which has no charge. Contact the City Forestry Division for details.

When should elm trees be pruned?

From November through March. NDSU advises pruning elms only in that window to lower the risk of Dutch elm disease, which bark beetles spread from tree to tree.

How long do I have to clear my sidewalk in Bismarck?

24 hours after the snow stops. City Ordinance 10-03-04 applies to owners and tenants and includes crosswalk areas on corner lots. If you don’t clear it, the city can clear it and bill the property. See Bismarck snow rules.

Can I push snow into the street in Bismarck?

No. Snow from driveways and sidewalks can’t go into the street, an alley or across the street onto the boulevard. Fines can reach $1,000, and the rule applies to snow contractors too. See our snow removal service.

How much snow does Bismarck get?

About 50.5 inches in an average year, based on NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals. December is the snowiest month at about 10.1 inches, and March averages about 8.5 inches. The record is 101.6 inches in the winter of 1996 to 1997.

Which ice melt works best in a Bismarck winter?

It depends on the temperature. Rock salt works down to about 15°F, magnesium chloride to about -13°F and calcium chloride to about -20°F, according to Iowa State University Extension. With January lows around 2°F, rock salt alone often isn’t enough.

BISMARCK FAQ • TOPIC 05

Sprinklers and Watering

4 local questions answered.

When should I blow out my sprinklers in Bismarck?

Before the first hard freeze, when temperatures drop to about 28°F. In Bismarck, that usually means late September through mid-October. The backflow preventer sits above ground and is usually the first part to crack. See when to blow out your sprinklers in Bismarck.

When can I turn my sprinklers on in spring?

Usually around mid-May, after the risk of a hard freeze has passed. Bismarck’s last spring frost averages around May 12 to 14. Turn the water on slowly and check each zone for broken heads and leaks.

How much should I water my lawn?

About 1 inch a week, counting rain, applied deeply once or twice a week. On clay soil, split each run into two shorter cycles so the water soaks in instead of running off. See our irrigation and sprinkler service.

Why is my summer water bill so high?

Bismarck uses tiered water rates, so heavy use costs more per unit. The City of Bismarck says demand climbs from about 200 million gallons a month to 600 million or more from May through September, mostly from lawn watering. One inch of water on 1,000 square feet of lawn is about 623 gallons.

BISMARCK FAQ • TOPIC 06

Yard Cleanup and Yard Waste

4 local questions answered.

When should I do fall cleanup in Bismarck?

Usually in October, after most leaves drop and before the ground freezes. Many yards need a second visit in late October or early November for the last leaves and the final mow at about 2 inches. See fall and spring yard cleanup.

Where can I take leaves and grass clippings in Bismarck?

To the City of Bismarck’s yard waste sites, open April through October, weather permitting. Empty your bags into the containers, since bags aren’t allowed. Branches go to the Bismarck Landfill, where clean wood and tree debris cost $40 a ton.

What are the dead trails in my lawn after the snow melts?

Vole trails. Voles feed on grass under the snow and leave winding paths of dead grass. Rake out the dead grass in spring and reseed spots that stay bare. Matted, straw-colored patches nearby are usually gray snow mold.

Should I cut back perennials in the fall?

Not all of them. An NDSU horticulturist leaves perennial stems standing in fall to trap snow, which insulates the plants. Cut back diseased plants in fall and the rest in early spring. Our fall yard checklist for Bismarck covers the rest of fall prep.
