Mowing

7 questions answered.

How high should I mow my lawn in Bismarck?

About 3 inches for most lawns. NDSU recommends 2.5 to 3.5 inches, about 3 inches for Kentucky bluegrass and about 3.5 inches for tall fescue. Taller grass shades the soil, grows deeper roots and crowds out weeds.

What is the one-third rule for mowing?

Never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade at once. If your lawn is 4.5 inches tall, cut it to 3 inches, not 2. Cutting more than that stresses the grass and opens the door to weeds.

When does mowing season start in Bismarck?

Most lawns need their first mow sometime in May, once the grass is growing well after the snow melts. The City of Bismarck’s first mowing deadline is June 1.

Does Bismarck have a rule about tall grass?

Yes. The City of Bismarck requires property to be mowed by June 1, July 1 and August 1, and by September 1 if needed. Grass and weeds taller than 8 inches break the rule. If you miss it, the city can hire a contractor and bill you, plus a $60 fee per parcel.

How short should the last mow of the year be?

About 2 inches, once the grass stops growing. NDSU says mowing until growth stops helps prevent snow mold, and short grass is less likely to mat down under Bismarck’s long snow cover.

Should I bag my grass clippings?

No. NDSU says your lawn wants the clippings. They return nutrients and help hold moisture. Bag only when the grass got very tall between mows and the clippings clump.

Why does my lawn look brown right after I mow?

Usually a dull blade. University of Maryland Extension says a dull blade can give a lawn a brown cast or make it look ragged after mowing. Sharpen or replace the blade at least once a year. See why is my lawn yellow.

Fertilizing

6 questions answered.

When should I fertilize my lawn in Bismarck?

Around Memorial Day and around Labor Day, with an optional feeding around the Fourth of July. NDSU says the Labor Day feeding is the most important, and it should go down before September 15.

How much fertilizer should I use?

About 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per feeding, according to NDSU. With a fertilizer that’s 25% nitrogen, that’s about 4 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet.

Is it too late to fertilize my lawn in North Dakota?

After the end of September, yes. NDSU says fertilizing beyond the end of September is not recommended, because the grass isn’t growing enough to use it. Late nitrogen can also make gray snow mold worse. Wait until around Memorial Day.

Should I use weed-and-feed?

NDSU advises against it. The best feeding times are late May and around Labor Day, but the best weed times are mid-April to mid-May for crabgrass and mid to late September for dandelions. A combo product is always early or late for one of them.

Why is my lawn yellow even after I fertilize?

Usually because Bismarck’s alkaline soil locks up iron. NDSU says North Dakota soils often run pH 8.5 to 9.0, well above the 6.5 lawns prefer. Get a soil test, then use a fertilizer with about 3% to 5% iron if the test points that way.

Should I put lime on my lawn?

No. Lime raises soil pH, and North Dakota soils already run high. Adding lime can make iron shortage and yellowing worse. See our lawn fertilization and weed control service.

Weeds

4 questions answered.

When should I put down crabgrass preventer in North Dakota?

About a week before the soil reaches 55°F at 4 inches deep, which NDSU says is usually mid-April to mid-May. Don’t use most preventers where you plan to seed, since they stop grass seed too.

When is the best time to spray dandelions?

Early fall, from mid to late September into early October. Dandelions send food to their roots in fall and pull the weed killer down with it. NDSU says to spray after a frost, during a few days warmer than 60°F.

How do I get rid of creeping Charlie?

Use a product with triclopyr in the fall, and plan on at least two applications. Iowa State Extension says creeping Charlie usually needs more than one treatment. Keep triclopyr off tree roots, since NDSU warns it can be hard on trees.

Should I mow before spraying weeds?

No. NDSU says it’s best not to mow for at least three days before and after spraying, so the weeds have plenty of leaf to take in the product. Also give it at least six dry hours with no rain after you spray.

Watering

5 questions answered.

How much should I water my lawn in Bismarck?

About 1 inch a week, counting rain, applied deeply once or twice a week. On clay soil, split each run into two shorter cycles so the water soaks in instead of running off. See our irrigation and sprinkler service.

How long should I run my sprinklers?

Long enough to put down about 1 inch of water a week, counting rain. Set a few empty tuna cans in each zone, run it for 15 minutes and measure. That tells you how many minutes each zone needs.

Can I overwater my lawn?

Yes. On clay soil, watering every day keeps the soil soggy, and roots can’t get air or take up iron well. Utah State Extension lists excessive soil moisture as a cause of iron chlorosis, which turns lawns yellow.

Why is my summer water bill so high?

Bismarck uses tiered water rates, so heavy use costs more per unit. The City of Bismarck says demand climbs from about 200 million gallons a month to 600 million or more from May through September, mostly from lawn watering. One inch of water on 1,000 square feet is about 623 gallons.

When should I blow out my sprinklers in Bismarck?

Before the first hard freeze, which usually means late September through mid-October. The backflow preventer sits above ground and is usually the first part to crack. See when to blow out your sprinklers in Bismarck.

Aeration and Seeding

5 questions answered.

When should I aerate my lawn in Bismarck?

Late August to mid-September, after the lawn comes out of summer dormancy, according to NDSU. Spring is the second-best time. You can still aerate after mid-September, up until the ground freezes.

Should I pick up the plugs after aerating?

No. NDSU says to let the cores dry for a couple of days, then mow over them to break them up. The soil settles back into the lawn.

When is the last day to seed grass in the fall?

NDSU says to sow seed by September 15 so it gets established before winter. After that, your options are dormant seeding in late fall, once the soil drops below 40°F but before it freezes, or seeding in spring. See aeration and overseeding in Bismarck.

What grass seed grows best in Bismarck?

Cool-season blends. NDSU suggests Kentucky bluegrass for a thick, hardy lawn, fine fescue for shade and salty spots along sidewalks, and a little perennial ryegrass to sprout fast and protect slower seed.

How long does grass seed take to come up?

Perennial ryegrass comes up in about five days. Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues can take two to three weeks, according to NDSU. Keep the soil damp the whole time.

Sod

2 questions answered.

When can I lay sod in Bismarck?

After the last spring frost, which usually falls around May 12 to 14. Sod season runs until about late September, when the first fall frost usually comes. Prep the clay with compost and grading first.

How often should I water new sod?

Every day for about 3 weeks, according to a regional North Dakota and Minnesota sod grower. Lay the sod within 24 hours of delivery and make the first mow in 7 to 10 days. If you lift a corner and the soil underneath is dry, water more.

Lawn Problems

5 questions answered.

Is my brown lawn dead or dormant?

In a Bismarck summer, it’s usually dormant. Cool-season grass slows down in heat and drought and greens up again when cooler, wetter weather comes back. Keep foot traffic off it and hold fertilizer until Labor Day.

What are the matted gray patches after the snow melts?

Usually gray snow mold. NDSU describes matted, straw-colored patches, sometimes with cottony webbing. Rake the matted spots so they dry out, then reseed any that stay bare.

What are the dead trails in my lawn in spring?

Vole trails. Voles feed on grass under the snow and leave winding paths of dead grass. Rake out the dead grass in spring and reseed spots that stay bare.

Why is my grass dying along the sidewalk?

Most likely salt from ice melt or plowed snow. Once the ground thaws in spring, Iowa State Extension says to give those areas a thorough soaking to flush the salt down. Reseed with a mix that includes fine fescue, which handles salt better than bluegrass.

How do I fix dog spots in my lawn?

Water the spot heavily as soon as you can after the dog goes. University of Maryland Extension says that reduces damage and helps recovery. Reseed or patch spots that stay dead.
