Landscape Rock, Mulch and Curbing in Bismarck, ND
Bismarck Landscape installs landscape rock, shredded bark mulch and concrete curbing for homes and businesses in Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln. These are the finishing jobs that make beds look sharp and keep mowing simple.
The short answer most people want: around trees, shrubs and flowers, shredded bark mulch is usually the better choice. NDSU Extension calls rock mulch “a heat trap.” Rock works best where there are few plants, like paths, side yards and drip strips. Curbing gives you a clean, permanent line between the two.
OUR SERVICES • CLEAN BEDS • SMART EDGES
What We Install
- Shredded bark and wood mulch for beds, borders and tree rings
- Landscape rock in beds, side yards, paths and drainage strips
- Concrete landscape curbing along beds, walks and tree rings
- Bed cleanup first: weeds, old mulch and edges cleaned up before anything new goes down
- Mulch rings around trees, sized and shaped the way NDSU recommends
- Rock-to-mulch conversions for beds where rock is cooking the plants

Rock or Mulch? What Works Better in Bismarck
NDSU Extension’s horticulturist is blunt about it: “Rock mulch is a heat trap.” It can scorch plants in summer and stress them in winter, and NDSU ties it to early death in heat-sensitive plants like birch, mountain ash and hosta. NDSU’s advice for trees and shrubs: “Use shredded bark instead.”
| Shredded bark mulch | Landscape rock | |
|---|---|---|
| Heat | Keeps roots cooler | Holds heat and reflects it onto plants |
| Soil | Breaks down and improves soil structure | Adds nothing and can pack soil down |
| Moisture | Holds moisture | Holds some, but plants face more drought stress from the heat |
| Weeds | Some weeds sprout as it breaks down | NDSU notes rock over fabric lets fewer weeds through |
| Upkeep | Top it up every year or two | Rarely needs adding, but leaves and dirt collect in it |
| Best spots | Trees, shrubs, perennial and flower beds | Paths, side yards, drip strips and areas with few plants |
A good Bismarck yard often uses both: bark where things grow, and rock where people walk or water drains. If you’re dealing with water along the house, see our yard drainage service.
CORRECT DEPTH • TREE ROOTS • ORDERING VOLUME
How Deep to Go and How Much to Order
For trees, NDSU says to spread shredded bark in a circle “at least three feet wide; the wider the better,” keeping it “minimal at the trunk” and building up to 3 to 4 inches at the outer edge. Don’t pile it against the trunk. NDSU calls those piles “volcano” mulch and says they cause trunk rot and give mice a place to nest.
In fall, pull mulch back at least 6 inches from tree trunks. Iowa State Extension notes mulch against bark hides voles while they chew. See protecting trees from rabbits and deer in winter.
How much to order. One cubic yard covers about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep. That works out to:
| Depth | One cubic yard covers about |
|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft |
So a 10 × 20-foot bed (200 square feet) at 3 inches deep needs about 2 cubic yards. That’s simple math, and it works for both mulch and rock.
MATERIALS • WEED CONTROL • SOIL HEALTH
Landscape Fabric: When It Helps and When It Doesn’t
An NDSU Extension horticulture agent wrote in July 2026 that “landscape fabric is not meant to be used as a long-term solution for weed control,” because “over time, organic material can build up on the fabric, creating an environment for weeds to germinate.” Weeds with taproots, like dandelions and thistle, can also punch through fabric and are harder to pull once they do.
Our approach:
- Under rock: fabric can help, since rock doesn’t break down. NDSU notes rock with fabric lets fewer weeds through than bark alone. Blow out leaves now and then so dirt doesn’t build up on top.
- Under bark mulch: usually skip it. The mulch is supposed to break down into the soil, and fabric blocks that.
LOCAL RESOURCES • CITY WOOD CHIPS • COUNTY RULES
City of Bismarck Wood Chips and Compost
Here’s a local option many people don’t know about. The City of Bismarck offers single-grind wood chips at no charge, on a trial basis, at two grass collection sites:
- Santa Fe Avenue and South 12th Street (Cottonwood Park parking lot)
- Ash Coulee Water Tower (northwest corner of Ash Coulee Drive and North Washington Street)
The Bismarck Landfill at 2111 North 52nd Street also has compost and wood chips when available. The city’s 2026 landfill fee schedule, updated September 4, 2026, lists:
| Product | Price at the landfill |
|---|---|
| Compost | No charge |
| Single-grind wood chips | No charge |
| Double-grind wood chips | $5 per cubic yard under 1 ton, or $30 per ton for 1 ton or more |
| Staff loading | $30 per load, or $100 for 4 loads in one day |
Bring a shovel and load it yourself, or pay for loading. Stop at the scale house before and after.
One big catch: these chips can’t leave Burleigh County. Because emerald ash borer was found in Bismarck, the city says wood chips can’t be removed from Burleigh County, and anyone who does faces a fine of up to $5,000. Mandan is in Morton County. See our emerald ash borer guide for Bismarck.
Single-grind chips are coarser than double-grind, so they suit back beds, tree rings and paths better than a front-yard showpiece.
LONG-LASTING EDGES • CLEAN LINES • WINTER CARE
Concrete Landscape Curbing
Concrete curbing is a continuous concrete edge poured in place along a bed, walk or tree ring. It’s popular because it:
- Gives the mower a clean line to run a wheel on, so there’s less trimming
- Keeps rock and mulch in the bed and grass out of it
- Follows curves smoothly around beds and tree rings
Two Bismarck tips:
- Plan for snow. Curbing along a driveway or walk sits right where the snow blower runs. Put in driveway stakes before the ground freezes so it doesn’t get clipped.
- Pair it with the right fill. Curbing holds rock well. With bark, keep the mulch an inch or so below the top of the curb so rain doesn’t wash it over.

SEASONAL ADVICE • SPRING TO WINTER
When to Mulch and Edge in Bismarck
- Spring: top up mulch after spring cleanup, once beds have dried out. See fall and spring yard cleanup.
- Summer: a fresh layer helps beds hold moisture through July heat.
- Fall: pull mulch back from tree trunks before winter, and put in driveway stakes along curbing.
- November: NDSU says to mulch tulip beds after the ground freezes. See the fall yard checklist for Bismarck.
- Curbing and rock: any time the ground isn’t frozen.
Questions
Rock, Mulch and Curbing FAQ
Clear answers on rock versus mulch, tree rings, landscape fabric, city wood chips and curbing costs.
Choosing rock, mulch or curbing?
Start with our rock versus mulch comparison for the right material in each spot.
Is rock or mulch better in Bismarck?
Around trees, shrubs and flowers, shredded bark mulch is usually better. NDSU Extension calls rock mulch a heat trap that can scorch plants in summer and stress them in winter. Rock works best on paths, side yards, drip strips and areas with few plants.
How deep should mulch be?
About 3 to 4 inches for trees and shrubs. NDSU says to keep it minimal at the trunk and build to 3 to 4 inches at the outer edge of a ring at least 3 feet wide. Never pile mulch against the trunk.
Does the City of Bismarck give out wood chips?
Yes. The city offers single-grind wood chips at no charge, on a trial basis, at its Cottonwood Park and Ash Coulee Water Tower sites, and at the Bismarck Landfill when available. Double-grind chips at the landfill cost $5 per cubic yard for less than a ton.
How much does landscape curbing cost in Bismarck?
About $7 to $8 per linear foot, based on Homeyou’s 2026 Bismarck data, so 100 feet runs about $700 to $800. LawnStarter’s September 2026 data puts the average Bismarck curbing job at about $1,078. These are estimates, not quotes.
Should I put landscape fabric under mulch?
Usually not under bark mulch. An NDSU Extension agent says landscape fabric isn’t a long-term weed solution, because organic material builds up on top and weeds grow in it. Fabric can help under rock, which doesn’t break down.
Can I take Bismarck wood chips to Mandan?
No. Because emerald ash borer was found in Bismarck, the city says wood chips can’t be removed from Burleigh County, with fines of up to $5,000. Mandan is in Morton County, so chips from Bismarck can’t go there.
