Plain answers for Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln yards. Every guide is written for our heavy clay, alkaline soil, short growing season, deep frost and long winters, using NDSU Extension research and City of Bismarck rules. Advice written for Ohio or Georgia doesn’t fit here. These do.

Questions

About These Guides

How our local guides are researched and when city rules differ.

Questions about your own yard?

Call and tell us what you are dealing with.

Where does the information in these guides come from?

From local, checkable sources: NDSU Extension for lawn, tree and soil advice, the City of Bismarck for snow, mowing, water, boulevard tree and yard waste rules, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture for emerald ash borer, and NOAA for frost dates and snowfall. Each guide links to its sources.

How often are the guides updated?

Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We revise guides when rules, prices or conditions change, like the emerald ash borer find in August 2026 or new water rates each year.

Do these guides apply to Mandan and Lincoln?

Mostly, yes. The soil, weather and frost dates are the same. Some city rules differ. Mandan allows snow on the unpaved boulevard and has a 6-inch grass limit, and it’s in Morton County, outside the Burleigh County ash quarantine as of September 2026. Lincoln has its own city rules too.
