A new build in north Bismarck starts with bare dirt and prairie wind. A 1920s home near downtown has a big elm and a boulevard ash. A lot near the Missouri River in south Bismarck deals with drainage. Here’s what each part of town needs.

NORTH • NEW YARDS

North Bismarck

Neighborhoods: Heritage Ridge, Silver Ranch, Boulder Ridge, Northridge, North Hills

North Bismarck is where most of the city’s growth is. Many homes here are only a few years old, and many yards started as bare, rutted construction dirt on open prairie.

What north Bismarck yards need most:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • Grading and sod so water drains away from new foundations
  • Sprinkler systems, ideally installed before the sod goes down
  • Windbreaks. Rows of spruce or other hardy evergreens help block prairie wind.
  • Snow removal for wide driveways that drift in fast on open lots
  • Aeration and overseeding for young lawns on packed construction soil

Emerald ash borer was first found in the city near Interstate Loop in August 2026, so ash owners on the north side should read our emerald ash borer guide for Bismarck.

Popular services here: lawn care, sprinklers and snow removal. For more on this side of town, see our north Bismarck landscaping page.

NORTHWEST • UPGRADES

Northwest Bismarck

Northwest Bismarck has more established homes and many larger lots. Yards here tend to be finished, so the work shifts to upgrades and upkeep:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • Patios, retaining walls and outdoor living spaces, built with deep bases that stand up to frost
  • Tree trimming and removal as older plantings mature
  • Lawn care programs to keep big lawns thick
  • Fall cleanups under larger trees

See how much landscaping costs in Bismarck for patio, wall and tree prices, or read more about northwest Bismarck landscaping.

CENTRAL • MATURE TREES

Central Bismarck and Downtown

Neighborhoods: the Cathedral District, Highland Acres, Washington Heights and older blocks near downtown and the State Capitol

The Cathedral District has homes dating back to the 1880s and early 1900s, known for their American elm trees. Central Bismarck has the city’s oldest trees, its longest runs of public sidewalk and many boulevard ash.

What central Bismarck yards need most:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • Tree care. Big elms and ash grow close to houses, garages and wires. Elms should only be pruned from November through March.
  • Emerald ash borer decisions. Many boulevard ash here are on the city’s treatment or removal plan. Ash on private lots need a treat-or-remove call. See our tree services.
  • Boulevard tree permits for any pruning or removal between the sidewalk and the curb
  • Snow removal for long sidewalks and corner lots, which must be cleared within 24 hours, including crosswalk areas
  • Shade-tolerant lawns. Fine fescue blends handle the shade under big trees better than straight bluegrass.
  • Heavy fall leaf cleanup, often two rounds

Downtown has its own winter rule: overnight parking limits from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., November 1 to March 31. Read Bismarck snow rules for the details. For tree, sidewalk and historic home tips, see central Bismarck and the historic districts.

SOUTH • RIVER AND DRAINAGE

South Bismarck

Neighborhoods: Fox Island, Southport, Riverwood and other areas near the Missouri River

South Bismarck sits on lower ground near the river. Sertoma Park runs more than 3 miles along the Missouri River here. In 2011, the Missouri River flood threatened low-lying neighborhoods along the river in south Bismarck.

What south Bismarck yards need most:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • Drainage and grading so water moves away from homes
  • Care for large trees, including big cottonwoods near the river
  • Storm cleanup after summer wind and hail
  • Patient spring cleanup. Lower lots stay wet longer, and raking soggy clay does more harm than good.
  • Smart sprinkler zoning, since some spots dry out slower than others

Our fall and spring yard cleanup service works around wet spring ground. See south Bismarck landscaping for more on river-area yards.

WEST OF THE MISSOURI

Mandan

ZIP code: 58554 | County: Morton | Population: about 24,800 (2024 estimate)

Mandan sits just across the Missouri River from Bismarck and is the county seat of Morton County. The soil, weather and frost dates are the same as Bismarck’s, so the same lawn, tree and sprinkler calendar applies.

A few Mandan differences matter for yard work:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • Snow rules. Mandan also gives you 24 hours to clear sidewalks, but it allows snow on the unpaved boulevard strip. Bismarck doesn’t.
  • Ash wood. Mandan is in Morton County, which wasn’t part of the emerald ash borer quarantine as of September 2026. Ash wood from Bismarck can’t be hauled to Mandan without a permit.
  • Yard waste. Bismarck’s yard waste sites are for Bismarck residents only, so Mandan yards need their own disposal plan.

Read more on our Mandan landscaping page.

SOUTHEAST BISMARCK AREA

Lincoln

ZIP code: 58504 | County: Burleigh | Population: about 4,500 (2024 estimate)

Lincoln sits right next to Bismarck’s southeast side. It was incorporated in 1977 and has grown from 656 people in 1980 to about 4,500 today. That means lots of newer homes and newer yards.

What Lincoln yards need most:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • New lawn installs, sod and sprinklers
  • Windbreaks and young trees, with guards against rabbits and voles
  • Snow removal for newer driveways and sidewalks

Lincoln is in Burleigh County, so the emerald ash borer quarantine applies there just like in Bismarck. Check Lincoln’s own city rules for snow placement. See landscaping in Lincoln, ND for more.

BEYOND THE CITY

Nearby Communities

We also work in Menoken, Baldwin, Wilton, Sterling and Washburn, and on rural acreages around Bismarck, depending on the job. Rural yards often need:

LOCAL YARD NEEDS

  • Shelterbelt and windbreak care, including ash checks
  • Long driveway snow removal
  • Large-lot mowing and fall cleanup
  • Tree removal for storm-damaged or dying trees

Call to check whether we can reach your property, or see nearby communities we serve for town-by-town details.

Explore the neighborhood sections above for city-specific advice and local services.

What areas do you serve?

We serve all of Bismarck, including ZIP codes 58501, 58503, 58504 and 58505, plus Mandan, Lincoln and nearby communities such as Menoken, Baldwin, Wilton, Sterling and Washburn, depending on the job.

Do you work in Mandan?

Yes. We do lawn care, tree work, snow removal, sprinklers and cleanups in Mandan. Mandan shares Bismarck’s weather and soil, but some rules differ, like allowing snow on the unpaved boulevard.

Do you work in Lincoln?

Yes. Lincoln sits next to Bismarck’s southeast side, shares ZIP code 58504 with south Bismarck, and is in Burleigh County. Many Lincoln homes are newer and need sod, sprinklers and young tree care.

Do you serve rural acreages near Bismarck?

Yes, depending on the job and distance. Rural work often includes shelterbelt care, tree removal, large-lot mowing and long driveway snow removal.

Are Mandan’s snow rules different from Bismarck’s?

Partly. Both cities give you 24 hours to clear sidewalks. Mandan allows snow on the unpaved boulevard strip, while Bismarck doesn’t allow snow on the boulevard or in the street.

Does the emerald ash borer quarantine cover Mandan?

Not as of September 2026. The quarantine covers Burleigh County, which includes Bismarck and Lincoln. Mandan is in Morton County, so ash wood from Bismarck can’t be moved there without a permit.

Can Mandan and Lincoln residents use Bismarck’s yard waste sites?

No. Bismarck’s yard waste sites are for Bismarck residents inside city limits.
