Emerald Ash Borer Basics
5 questions answered.
Is emerald ash borer in Bismarck?
Yes. City forestry staff found it the week of August 26, 2026, near Interstate Loop while removing declining ash trees. It was the first find in central North Dakota, and the state added Burleigh County to its EAB quarantine. Our emerald ash borer guide for Bismarck covers the full story.
What does emerald ash borer look like?
The adult is a small, metallic green beetle about half an inch long. You’ll rarely see one. The damage comes from the larvae, which tunnel under the bark and cut off the flow of water and nutrients through the tree.
How long does it take emerald ash borer to kill an ash tree?
Usually 2 to 5 years once larvae numbers are high, depending on the tree’s size and health, according to NDSU Extension. The North Dakota Department of Agriculture says an infested ash can die in as little as 2 years.
How fast does emerald ash borer spread?
On its own, only about 1 to 2 miles a year, according to NDSU. It moves much farther when people haul infested firewood and ash logs, which is why the quarantine exists.
When are emerald ash borer beetles active in North Dakota?
NDSU says adults fly from mid-June to mid-July, with the peak in mid to late July. Larvae feed under the bark from late June through October. In a cold state like North Dakota, one generation can take two years.

Is My Tree an Ash?
4 questions answered.
How do I know if my tree is an ash?
Look for branches and buds that grow directly across from each other, and compound leaves with 5 to 11 leaflets that have finely toothed edges. Older ash bark is gray with diamond-shaped ridges. Green ash is by far the most common ash in North Dakota yards.
Does emerald ash borer attack mountain ash?
No. Mountain ash isn’t a true ash, so EAB doesn’t attack it. You can tell it apart by its leaves, which are staggered along the twig, and its red-orange berries.
What are the signs of emerald ash borer in my tree?
The North Dakota Department of Agriculture lists six signs: thinning leaves at the top, leafy sprouts from the trunk, bark splitting, woodpecker damage, S-shaped tunnels under the bark and D-shaped exit holes about 1/8 inch across. Two or more signs together are worth a closer look.
How do I report emerald ash borer in North Dakota?
Use the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s online Report a Suspect Ash Tree form, call state EAB reporting line and choose option 2, or email ReportAPest@nd.gov. For a boulevard tree, you can also call Bismarck Forestry at Bismarck Forestry.

Treat or Remove
4 questions answered.
Do I have to cut down my ash tree now?
No. Finding EAB in Bismarck doesn’t mean every ash has to come down this year. Bismarck’s city forester told residents in September 2026, “You’ve got time.” A healthy ash can be protected with treatment.
How do I decide whether to treat or remove my ash tree?
Treat it if it’s healthy, well placed and worth paying to protect every 2 to 3 years. Remove it if more than about 40% of the canopy is dead, it’s in a bad spot, or you don’t want the ongoing cost. Our guide on whether to treat or remove your ash tree walks through five questions that decide it.
How much does it cost to treat an ash tree compared to removing it?
Purdue University estimated about $300 per injection every 3 years for a 30-inch ash, compared with $1,800 to $3,600 to remove it plus about $500 to replant. Published Bismarck cost guides put local tree removal around $400 to $1,900, depending on height. These are estimates, not quotes.
Is it too late to treat my ash tree?
It depends on how much of the top is dead. NDSU says trees with more than 40% canopy decline “are not likely to recover” and shouldn’t be treated. If your ash is still mostly full, you haven’t missed anything. The next injection window in North Dakota is spring 2027.

Treating an Ash Tree
5 questions answered.
What is the best treatment for emerald ash borer?
Trunk injections of emamectin benzoate. NDSU reports better than 99% control of EAB for at least two years, even under heavy EAB pressure. The state recommends hiring a reputable tree service that uses a certified pesticide applicator.
How often do ash trees need to be treated?
Most trees need a new emamectin benzoate injection every 2 to 3 years for as long as you want to keep the tree. Homeowner soil products usually need to be applied every year.
When is the best time to treat ash trees in North Dakota?
NDSU says trunk injections work best from mid-May to mid-June, as the leaves come out and before EAB eggs hatch. Homeowner soil drenches are best in early to mid-May.
Can I treat my ash tree myself?
For smaller trees, yes. NDSU lists an imidacloprid soil drench and a dinotefuran bark spray for homeowners. For trees larger than 15 inches across, NDSU says to consider a professional. Always follow the product label.
How do I measure my ash tree’s trunk?
Wrap a tape measure around the trunk 4.5 feet above the ground, then divide by 3.14. A trunk that measures 47 inches around is about 15 inches across, which is the size where NDSU says to call a professional.

Ash Wood and the Quarantine
4 questions answered.
What does the Burleigh County quarantine mean for homeowners?
You can’t move ash logs, limbs, branches, roots, wood chips, nursery stock or any hardwood firewood out of Burleigh County without a permit. Civil fines can reach $5,000. Bismarck and Lincoln are both in Burleigh County.
Can I take ash wood from Bismarck to Mandan?
Not without a permit. Mandan is in Morton County, so hauling ash wood from a Bismarck yard across the Missouri River means taking it out of Burleigh County, which the quarantine doesn’t allow.
Where can I take ash branches and logs in Bismarck?
To the Bismarck Landfill, where clean wood and tree debris cost $40 a ton with a $6 minimum. It’s open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Branches aren’t allowed at the city’s yard waste sites.
Is it safe to buy firewood in Bismarck?
Buy firewood where you’ll burn it, and don’t haul it to the lake or cabin. Heat-treated firewood labeled as meeting the state standard of 140°F for at least 60 minutes is the safe choice. The Bismarck Landfill stopped giving out and selling firewood in September 2026.

Boulevard Trees and City Rules
5 questions answered.
Who owns the tree between the sidewalk and the curb?
The City of Bismarck. Trees on the boulevard, between the sidewalk and the curb, are city trees. Pruning, planting or removing one needs a city permit, which has no charge. Call the Forestry Division at Bismarck Forestry, option 3.
What is the City of Bismarck doing with its boulevard ash trees?
The city plans to treat about 2,600 of its roughly 5,200 boulevard ash over 3 years and remove the other 2,600 over 4 years, then replace them. Don’t treat, prune or remove a boulevard ash on your own.
Will the city remove a dead boulevard tree?
Yes, at no cost, if the tree is more than 50% dead, unsafe from natural causes, has Dutch elm disease, or was damaged by city root work. If you remove a boulevard tree under a permit, the stump must come out too.
How high do branches need to be over sidewalks and streets?
The City of Bismarck requires 10 feet of clearance over sidewalks, 13.5 feet over residential streets and 16 feet over main arterial streets.
Does a tree service need a license in Bismarck?
Yes. Anyone doing paid tree pruning or removal in Bismarck needs a city commercial arborist license. To get one, a person must be ISA certified or pass the city’s test, and carry insurance. The city keeps a public list of licensed arborists. See our tree services.

Pruning, Planting and Winter Care
6 questions answered.
When is the best time to trim trees in Bismarck?
Late winter works for most trees, while they’re dormant and you can see the branches clearly. Elms have a firm rule of November through March. Broken or hanging limbs after a storm should come down right away, any time of year.
Why can elms only be pruned from November through March?
NDSU advises pruning elms only in that window to lower the risk of Dutch elm disease. Bark beetles spread the disease from tree to tree.
What should I plant to replace an ash tree?
Something different from what’s already on your block. The City of Bismarck’s approved boulevard tree list is a good starting point. NDSU’s recommended tree list limits maples on soil above pH 7.2, and a lot of Bismarck soil runs alkaline.
How do I plant a new tree so it survives?
NDSU says to dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball, set the root flare at ground level, backfill with the original soil and mulch 3 to 4 inches deep, kept off the trunk. Stake it for one year only. Water twice a week at first, then weekly, then every 10 to 14 days.
How do I protect young trees from rabbits in winter?
Wrap the trunk with 1/4-inch hardware cloth or a white plastic guard that reaches 18 to 24 inches above the deepest snow you expect and sits 2 to 3 inches into the soil. NDSU’s forester says rabbits and voles kill more trees each winter than cold does. See protecting trees from rabbits and deer in winter.
Why are my evergreens turning brown after winter?
Usually winter burn. Sun and wind dry out the needles while the ground is frozen, so the roots can’t replace the water. It shows up most on the south, southwest and windward sides. Salt and disease can look similar. See our evergreen winter burn guide.
